Prison Island Tour

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island located about 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar. It originally housed a prison (which was never used for prisoners) and later a quarantine station, but is now famous for its giant tortoise sanctuary.

Access is by boat, typically a local wooden boat or a traditional dhow, from Stone Town. The boat ride usually takes about 20-30 minutes.

The primary attraction is the Aldabra giant tortoise sanctuary, where you can see and interact with very old tortoises. You can also explore the historic prison ruins and enjoy the beach for swimming and sunbathing.

Yes, you are usually allowed to feed the tortoises. Food (like leafy greens) is often provided or available for purchase on the island.

Some of the tortoises on the island are exceptionally old, with many well over 100 years old, and a few even older, having been brought from Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles.
