Mount Meru is a stunning dormant stratovolcano located in Tanzania and is the centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Often seen as the “little brother” to Mount Kilimanjaro, it is Africa’s fifth-highest and Tanzania’s second-highest mountain. The climb to its 4,562-meter (14,967 ft) summit, known as Socialist Peak, is a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience.
The trek typically takes 3 to 4 days along the single Momella Route. The path winds through diverse ecosystems, from lush montane forests filled with wildlife like buffaloes, giraffes, and various monkeys, to alpine deserts closer to the summit. Many climbers use a Mount Meru ascent as an excellent way to acclimatize before tackling the higher altitude of Kilimanjaro. The final push to the summit is a spectacular journey along a narrow ridge, offering breathtaking views of the Meru Crater, its ash cone, and on a clear day, the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro in the distance.
